Doesn't benzen come from benzin and benzin from Mr Benz (as in Mercedes-Benz?) Jcwf 30. okt 2010, 21:41 (UTC)

The English Wikipedia says: "In many countries gasoline is called Benzine or some variant. This name for gasoline derives from the chemical benzene." and the Danish wikipedia: "Derimod har navnet "benzin" intet med Carl Benz at gøre, der i 1885 byggede verdens første i praksis anvendelige personbil." = "the name has nothing to do with Carl Benz". Actually none of the above, it seems. The name goes back to an Arab term for the resin of the Styrax benzoin tree from Sumatra The resin is erroneously called after Java: luban jawi => lubanjuin => benzoin = benzin). The latter name was given to a compound C6H6 by Mitscherlich in the mid 1800's. Later this compound was rename benzene and the benzin word got attached to the fuel. ordnet.dk says the etymology is combination of benzoe and -in, so it looks like you are right. I just wonder how some kind of perfume can have become the name for gasoline which have a very bad smell :-) Kinamand 31. okt 2010, 18:55 (UTC)

OpfB.3II1.137. heraf: Benzin-baad (Sal.II. 864), -motor ofl." which means that the danish word benzin comes from German which have it from Benzoe which is resin from a three in asia.
